How I painted T. 4. 2. (Now on its way to Black Stump Gallery in Broome).

December 02, 2022

A group of friends sharing morning tea is a theme I have visited a few times and something I enjoy painting.

The people featured in the paintings are often from my imagination although in the case of Tea With Rebecca (below), this was a real event where I had tea with two people I knew. I painted this in 2007:

Tea With Rebecca:

The Banquet was a commission I painted in 2011.

The Banquet:

How I created T.4.2.

I started this painting by sketching the image I had in my mind onto the canvas with willow stick charcoal.

Rubbing out parts of the sketch with a damp cloth until I was happy with the composition.

I then sealed the sketch with spray fixative and self-leveling gel.

Then working with thin layers of acrylic wash I began to build up colour, allowing some of this wash to run into other parts of the painting.

And then working with oil washes to build more colour and complexity and getting the richness of colour that oil paint gives.

Allowing the oil paint to dry for a few days I returned to the painting and slowly started to add detail with oil paint and oil stick.

It is at this stage that I work slowly taking time to consider the painting so far and to be very careful not to overwork it.

I am happy with the finished piece, please contact Simon and Emma and Black Stump Gallery in Broome if you want more details.

More acrylic washed and the painting is starting to come together:

And now for the richness of oil paint!
