How to Paint Ceramics: Fish, Dogs and Colours

Continuing my collaboration with Kevala Ceramics, for the last few months I have been working on this new series of fish and dog painted ceramic bowls.

Kevala Ceramics supply these beautiful shapes to me already bisque fired. I then add my designs by using a number of techniques specifically for painting on ceramic surfaces.

Ceramic Painting Techniques

I soak each ceramic piece in water so that the paper stencils I have made stick to the surface. This is the first step in the ceramic painting process.

I then choose an underglaze colour and over the top of the paper shapes I apply three coats getting a smooth, even covering.

After the underglaze is dry, I carefully peel off the paper leaving the white shapes of either fish of dogs ready to add the details.

Using a variety of coloured underglazes, I paint each shape giving character to these whimsical creatures.

When I have finished painting, the ceramic pieces are returned to Kevala Ceramics to have a clear gloss glaze applied to the outside surface and a coloured matt glaze to the inside surface. I like the contrast of the glossy outside and the matt ceramic finish on the inside. For anyone interested in painting ceramics, it’s highly rewarding and interesting to explore using different glazes and finishes.

Each of my ceramic pieces is unique and is available from my gallery in Ubud, Zanzibar Art House or from Kevala Ceramics stores in Bali (located in Ubud and Sanur).
